You probably already know that February is Heart Healthy month and one of the best ways you can keep your heart healthy is to look towards the Mediterranean sea!

In the Fall of 2016, I traveled to an island off the coast of Portugal and checked out their heart healthy diet. I found the foods they ate, that helped lower their risk for heart disease, was a lot LESS about eating a particular food and MORE about eating a balance of foods that work together.

This is what the Islanders told me that they thought, took the best care of their Heart and their health!

So would you like to boost your heart health?

Then check out the Islanders Heart Healthy Diet!

The natives ate salmon and seafood 3x's a week or more, because it's rich in omega-3 fatty acids that helped lower dangerous levels of fat and fought the inflammation that may have been circulating inside their lovely physics.

The first pressing of olives is the richest in antioxidants. Used around the island from sautéing to dressings to snacking on olives. This beautiful green oil was everywhere, combating inflammation and cholesterol and preventing damage to their artery walls.

The natives knew, only too well, that virtually all veggies and fruits supplied heart healthy compounds (Vitamin C, potassium, magnesium) to protect their blood vessels and improve their blood pressure control.

Avocados were added to many of the island dishes for lowering artery clogging cholesterol and supplying a big dose of Folic Acid and Vitamin E. Two vitamins that lower the risk of heart disease, and you don't need a lot to reap the benefits.

The natives of the island loved their after dinner port, in moderation. It helped boost their good cholesterol (HDL) and helped keep their platelets from sticking together.

BEWARE: Watch out for the foods that say "Certified Heart Healthy" on the package. These are Big Food Companies wanting you to eat their foods that many times are not that heart healthy. To give you an example: One product certified as 'heart healthy' by the FDA is Fruit Loops!

Just a little TIDBIT:

The foods that are good for your heart are also good for the health of your brain, too! Now how cool is that?
