Hello, Dyan here (The Health Coach Is In) to talk this week about aromatherapy and essential oils and how they can (absolutely) be a benefit to your health.
BUT FIRST: LET'S LOOK AT HOW IT ALL BEGAN....
Aromatherapy actually started 6,000 years ago with the burning of fragrant woods, leaves, needles and tree gums to scent huts, cottages and houses.
It seems the Egyptians may have been the first people to extensively make use of essential oils and aromatic herbs. Oils, like cedarwood, clove and myrrh were used by the Egyptians to
embalm the dead
When a tomb was opened, traces of the herbs were discovered with intact portions of the body. Amazingly, the scent (although faint) was also still there.

in his laboratory. As he grabbed the first available compound he had handy (lavender) to treat his badly burnt hand, he found not only did this undiluted lavender oil immediately ease his pain, but it also helped heal his hand without any signs of infection or a scar.

Which brings us to modern times. Since the late 1970's the use of essential oils has become a major part of alternative and holistic health care, and has a huge following across the world.
WHAT ACTUALLY ARE ESSENTIAL OILS?
Essential oils are concentrated extracts taken from the roots, leaves, seeds or blossoms of plants. Each contains its own mix of active ingredients and this mix determines what the oil is used for.

HOW TO USE
Make sure your scents are therapeutic grade.
Essential oils should NOT be ingested.

Steep 4-6 drops in water or a diffuser and breathe in with nice deep breaths.

Add 10-15 drops to a hot bath.

FOR YOUR SKIN:
Dilute your essential oils in water or a carrier oil (sweet almond, apricot, jojoba, avocado) when applying to your skin. Add 1-2 drops of your EO for every tablespoon of carrier oil or water you use.
Add 40-45 drops for every 8 ounces of water.
