Hello, Dyan here (The Health Coach Is In) to talk this week about EXERCISE.
Don't we all have a bit of a complicated relationship with exercise? We all loved it as a kid, because it was just DARN fun! But as soon as we think we need to lose weight, exercise loses it's fun and becomes a chore. All of sudden, exercise is just a means to help us lose weight. A part of our life that was once fun, is now littered with stress and fear, says Jamie Mendell, Life and Health Coach in San Francisco.
Fear that if we miss a workout, we won't have the body we want. And if we don't have the body we want, then we won't be liked, loved, accepted, admired. I think you know what she means.
SO WHAT CAN YOU DO?
Turn around your relationship with exercise, just like you turn around your relationship with food, says Jamie. Start by taking the focus off of exercising to lose weight, and allow yourself to reconnect with your body and how you want to move. Not how you SHOULD!
Re-learn what is fun for you and what kind of exercises you TRULY enjoy. Start going for long walks around your neighborhood, instead of forcing yourself to go to the gym or wake up and go running when you really don't want to.
Tell your body "I'm going to move you in beautiful ways because I care about you," instead of you needing to burn X amount of calories and workout X amount of days.
When we force ourselves to do exercises we don't want to do, this causes EXTRA stress on our minds and then into our bodies, making us feel more exhausted than energized.
AS JAMIE MENDELL WILL TELL US....
OUR BODIES HAVE BEEN THERE FOR US THROUGH EVERYTHING!
They've been there through all the diets. All the babies. All the hard moments. All the intimate moments. All the fun moments. All the growth spurs. All the health scares. All of it.... Everything!
OUR BODY HAS BEEN THERE FOR US AND IT DESERVES OUR LOVE!
Love doesn't look like forcing ourselves to workout on a day our body is begging for rest, or pushing our bodies to run on a treadmill bored out of our gored staring at a screen.
Moving our bodies with love looks like moving in a way that brings us joy. It looks like asking our bodies what would feel energizing and fun and then doing that. It looks like resting when we need it.
So this week, remember all that your body has done for you and continues to do for you, and then give your unique physique the gift of moving with joy. Ask yourself, "What would feel fun and energizing for me to do today?"
Maybe you'll want to go for a long walk with your favorite music.
Maybe you'll want to dance naked around your house.
Maybe you'll want to try a brand new sport.
Maybe you'll want to go biking or hiking with your new best friend.
Discover the MOVEMENT and exercise that will be just right for you and your body, like you did on DAY 17 of....
and choose the form of movement that's fun and makes you feel AMAZING! Just like the delicious foods you put on your plate!
With Intuitive Eating you'll focus on how it feels to move your body rather than how many calories you're burning.
Your body wants to feel good, says Jamie and will let you know what exercises it wants each day. Just make sure whatever it is, it lights you up and makes you happy. It is when you are in this state of JOY that everything flows.
Step away from the rigid workouts. Try this loving, gentle approach instead, and I think you'll be surprised how quickly you'll move toward your body goal.
LESS PUSH, LESS STRESS, LESS FORCING. MORE JOY, MORE FUN, MORE FLOW.
